• New Swedish cultural centre features dramatic Perspex® light installation

A brand new centre for the performing arts has opened in the Swedish city of Jönköping. The new and architecturally outstanding landmark will host more than 800 performing arts events each year, including theatre, dance and music, in a spectacular 15.000 m2 venue capable of holding up to 1700 people.

Taking centre stage at the entrance to this striking piece of architecture is a magnificent light installation created using Perspex® clear cast acrylic sheet. Light and art The dramatic light structure, known as the Spiralamp, comprises four pieces of intricate light art conceived by renowned Swedish artist and designer Ingegerd
    Råman.

Best known for her belief that design and functionality go hand in hand, Råman collaborated with Perspex® fabricator Fagerhult to ensure that the installation provided a fabulous focal point for the centre and made use of light in the most creative and imaginative way.

Inspired solution In a huge project requiring up to 40 sheets of 15mm thick Perspex® clear cast sheet, Fagerhult worked closely with the designer on this challenging project. “The challenge was to achieve the simplicity of light lines“ says Istvan Magyarovari, Engineering Designer at Fagerhult.

The lines were created with innovative LED-solutions together with an optical technique which makes the light reflect in the Perspex®. “This treatment allows us to blend light naturally into the fittings, which means visitors can look directly at the light source to fully appreciate the effect”, concludes Istvan.
     Stunning installation
The result is a stunning installation which brings together the unique skills of those involved; Ingegerd Råman’s design ethos of creating high quality using innovative techniques; Fagerhult’s experience and expertise in Perspex® fabrication and light technology; and the way in which Perspex® can interplay with light to create something truly remarkable.

    Project parameters
Leading Swedish designer Ingegerd Råman has used Perspex® clear cast acrylic sheet to create a spectacular new light installation at Spira – the new cultural centre for performing arts in the Swedish city of Jönköping.

The four piece light installation – known as Spiralamp - is located at the entrance of the new building, forming a dramatic focal point for visitors.

Experienced Perspex® fabricators, Fagerhult used 40 sheets of 15mm clear Perspex® cast acrylic sheet in the construction of this intricate light art.

The striking Illuminated lines, a main feature of the Spiralight, were created by cutting “V” grooves into the sheet and illuminating them with LEDs. The Perspex® was machine cut to size and diamond polished to optimise the edge lighting effect given off from the LEDs.

The finished result is a dramatic light installation which brings together light and art.
